What You Need:
2 C flour
4 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4C shortening
3/4C milk
2 TBSP melted butter or margarine
4 C apples, peeled, cored and sliced
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 1/4C brown sugar, divided
3 TBSP canola oil
How to Make It:
Sift the flour into a large mixing bowl.
Sift the baking powder and salt together into the flour.
Cut in the shortening with a pastry blender or two knives.
Pour in the milk mixing as you pour and continue mixing quickly until completely combined.
Lightly flour a flat surface.
Place the dough on the floured surface and roll into a rectangle sheet that is 1/2in thick.
Brush the dough with the melted butter or margarine.
Place the cinnamon and 1 C brown sugar together in a small bowl and mix together until completely combined.
Place the apple slices on the dough evenly.
Sprinkle evenly with the brown sugar mixture.
Roll the dough into a jelly roll.
Cut the roll into 2 in slices.
Bring the oven temperature to 425 degrees.
Place the canola oil in the bottom of a large baking dish being sure the bottom is completely covered with the oil.
Sprinkle the remaining brown sugar over the bottom of the pan.
Place the jelly roll slices into the pan.
Bake 35 minutes.

These little treats make a wonderful after school snack for children. Use a brown sugar substitute to make this snack a little healthier.
